Human resource management, formerly known as personnel management, has gradually become something of a science in recent years,
bound by ever stricter controls and checks against abuse and inequality.
The management of people in the workplace, whether managers, supervisors or the rank and file of the organization, has developed considerably, underpinned by theory and regulated by legislation.
The sheer complexity of human resource management (HRM) and the
implications related to its provision and scope have given rise to a new
discipline which requires the systematic training of personnel professionals. Coping with the profusion of terms, jargon, legislation and
procedures can be an onerous task for practitioners and an even greater
challenge for those studying the discipline.
Human resource management encompasses a far wider field of
responsibilities and areas of importance than simply managing the
workforce, dealing with pay, conditions, discipline and grievances; it is
increasingly concerned with the development and the retention of key
employees. To this end, new developments seek to identify and fulfil the
requirements of these employees in terms of their training, their attitudes to work and the organization, and their understanding of the part
their job role plays in the wider context.
In all areas of human resource management, systems have been
developed not only to streamline processes, but to ensure that the
increasingly complex legislative framework is adhered to and that
mechanisms are put in place to ensure that employees have more extensive opportunities to participate and become involved in their own
development and prospects.
